Components, according to ASAE’s definition, are an affiliated or independent society, chapter, branch, special-interest group, or division of an international, national, state, regional, or local organization. Some associations require all members to join the component and the national or international organization. For example, the American Dental Association requires individuals to belong to the local, state, and national organization. Other organizations, such as the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), allow individuals to join an affiliate chapter, the national organization, or both. SHRM has more than 575 affiliate chapters in the United States and abroad. SHRM chapters are autonomous organizations.
